About Cuarto del Rescate

On 16 November 1532, one hundred and sixty-eight Spaniards under Francisco Pizarro waited in the buildings around the main square while Atahualpa was carried in with thousands of unarmed attendants. The ambush took about two hours and ended with the Inca ruler a prisoner. He offered a ransom: one room filled once with gold and twice over with silver, gathered from temples across the empire. It was paid. He was executed anyway, in July 1533.

The room itself is smaller and plainer than the story around it. It is a single stone chamber, trapezoidal in section the way Inca masonry usually is, with a doorway at the top of worn steps and fitted unmortared stonework in the walls. A modern roof covers it. There are no gold objects here and no reconstruction; what survives is the architecture and a few interpretive signs, and the building is now protected as part of a small site in the city centre.

Opinions differ on whether this was the ransom room or Atahualpa's cell, and the signage says so rather than picking a side. It is worth knowing that going in, because the honest version of the story is more interesting than the tidy one.

An hour is enough. It is a few streets off the Plaza de Armas, in the centre at 2,750 metres, and open year-round. Most visitors pair it with the Plaza and the Belén complex in the same morning, which is how the city centre is best seen in any case: on foot, in one go.

The Cuarto del Rescate is the only Inca building still standing in Cajamarca, and the room where the Spanish conquest of Peru turned.
